Special education is a set of services that are provided to students with disabilities in order to help them learn and succeed in school. These services can include specialized instruction, accommodations, and modifications. Special education is provided at no cost to parents and is based on the individual needs of the student.

There are many different types of disabilities that can qualify a student for special education services. Some of the most common disabilities include:
  • Learning disabilities
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Physical disabilities
  • Hearing impairments
  • Visual impairments
Special education services can be provided in a variety of settings, including:
  • Regular classrooms
  • Special education classrooms
  • Self-contained classrooms
  • Homebound instruction
The goal of special education is to help all students reach their full potential. By providing specialized instruction and support, special education can help students with disabilities succeed in school and in life.

Here are some of the benefits of special education:
  • Students with disabilities can receive the individualized instruction they need to learn and succeed.
  • Students with disabilities can develop the skills they need to participate in school and in the community.
  • Students with disabilities can develop positive self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Students with disabilities can have the opportunity to learn alongside their non-disabled peers.
  • If you think your child may need special education services, you should contact your school district. The school district will conduct an evaluation to determine if your child is eligible for services. If your child is eligible, the school district will develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for your child. The IEP is a written document that outlines your child's educational goals, the services that will be provided to help your child reach those goals, and how your child's progress will be monitored.

Special education can be a great resource for students with disabilities. If you think your child may need special education services, I encourage you to contact your school district and learn more about what is available. Special education is a vital resource for students with disabilities. By providing specialized instruction and support, special education can help students with disabilities succeed in school and in life. If you think your child may need special education services, I encourage you to contact your school district and learn more about what is available.
